[First line: Clarilla, where's the Queen?]

Primary Text:

MS Folger, 70 [originally 62]-129.

Secondary Ed:

1903 Reynolds prints Folger text, 271-336.

Source:

A history of Venice, from the Italian through French?

Comment:

A better play than the lack of editions suggests; very readable; some scenes & speeches extremely good; well-structured, carefully done; real reflection of luxurious court; influenced by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Othello and Beaumont and Fletcher tragicomedies.

Date:

Begun shortly after Mary of Modena fled the court at London; she clearly has Mary of Modena in mind for Queen of Cypress, and describes and alludes to a variety of incidents surrounding James II's queen's flight. Written over the early 1690's.
