How ill the Motion with the Musick suits!
So Orpheus fidled, and so danced the Brutes.
Comment:
Possibly by Finch as last in above referred-to series of ten poems; the next poem is superscribed "By another Hand," implying all those since "To Mr Jervas" by the same hand. The bluntness and love of music is characteristic of Finch; so too the distaste for fools. Here dancing which entertains the animals who lack the brains to listen quietly. The reference to Orpheus ("So Orpheus fidled, and so danced the Brutes") is also a favorite with Finch in her satiric mood (as in "To Mr Pope In Answer to a coppy of Verses").
