As they have handed you the living torch

As they have handed you the living torch,
the most fiercely burning presence on earth
has entered your noble mind, where your soul
withdrew, sheltered in peace for a long time,

your vivid spirit--which naturally
dislikes the vicious--fired by His flame,
taught by an omnipotent light, longs for
a ray and feels a warmth beyond this world's,

if from now on you climb the summit, Sir,
your unaided fine genius and courage,
will drive away each sordid thought and act,

and onto your purged transformed heart, Jesus
will inscribe with His most cherished words, and
with His own hand, the deepest mysteries.
